With Christmas fast approaching Nomads went into their final league game with a long list of players unavailable for various reasons.
With a number of 2s players stepping up as they have all season the match started with some promise although Nomads fell behind to a goal from a short corner after around 5 minutes. Rather than discourage Nomads this was a catalyst for some good attacking play as they used their pace to break through the RWB midfield and launch counter attacks.
Nomads then forced an equaliser with Trudy Dillon scoring her 1st of the season with a strong strike from a penalty corner. Unfortunately the lead was short lived with RWB getting in behind the Nomads defence, despite that Nomads still looked dangerous with Nat Hodge and Steph Edge making some strong runs through the middle.
Unfortunately the next goal went to RWB, despite Nomads Captain Laura Besnard making a terrific diving save the defence was unable to get a strong clearance outside the D.
Going in at half time Nomads could feel a little unlucky to trail by 2 having competed well and looked dangerous when attacking.
The 2nd half became more of a struggle as Nomads struggled to break through the press while still looking dangerous on occasions, despite being penned in their own half for large periods they defended strongly with Lilly Wysmuller making some good tackles and interceptions in midfield well supported by Steph who covered a huge amount of ground.
Despite their best efforts they did concede 1 final goal having gone down to 10 players due to injury as the game finished 4-1.
After a tough season everyone that has been involved with the 1st team can be proud of the effort put in and particularly the progress made by the team and junior members. Huge credit should go to all the senior players that have helped create a positive and enjoyable environment for them to thrive.
From the records that I have kept so far this season the Nomads goal scoring charts(excluding Herve Shield and Channel Island Ladies Tournament) are as follows.
Joni Gorman 8
Lisa Grant-Phillips 5
Steph Edge 2
Ciara Mcquaid 1
Pat Fior 1
Tiff Newbald 1
Emily Genee 4
Erin Moffett 4
Abbie Le Marquand 2
Ella Brennand 2
Jess Watling 1
Lilly Wysmuller 1
Lucy O'Connor 1
Triona Danaher 1
Zara Norem 1
With the Jersey vets playing away in UK competition Nomads had 2 forced changes against a Quackers side near its full strength.
Right from the opening minute it was a match played in good spirits at a high pace. With both teams looking to pass and move rather than dribble in the centre of the pitch the game flowed well and some half chances were created at both ends without either side getting a clear look at goal.
As the 1st half wore on Nomads started to control the possession more but despite a fair amount of time in and around the Quackers D could not find either a clear shot or a penalty corner.
Despite heavy rain the 2nd half continued in the same fashion and Nomads took the lead through a brilliant reverse stick deflection by Pat Fior. With both teams tiring the counter attack was looking increasingly dangerous.
With around 10 minutes left Quackers scored an equaliser after a brilliant counter attack starting at their own D and ending with a slap hit into the top corner. They then had the chance to snatch victory with a penalty corner at the final whistle but good defence by Nomads kept it to 1-1.
Ultimately a draw was fair to both sides after an enjoyable match, with a number of young players on both sides playing well there were promising sides for Jersey Hockey.
Finally well done to everyone involved in both the U17s and Vets victories this weekend.
Jersey U17s 4-1 Guernsey U17s
Jersey Vets 6-0 Hailsham
